Overview:
The discovery of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments is one of the most significant advances for many years in acne treatment of live acne (acne vulgaris). Acne patients undergoing IPL treatment for pitted scarring, soon discovered that IPL was also having a beneficial effect on fresh breakouts. In addition to boosting collagen production, it is believed that the IPL treatment keeps fresh breakouts at bay by killing the bacteria that cause infection and the formation of spots.

FAQ's

What is acne?
Acne is a chronic skin disorder caused by the inflammation of the hair follicles and the sebaceous glands of the skin. It is a widespread and embarrassing condition that affects both teenagers and adults. It can produce life-long scars, both physically and emotionally. It typically begins during adolescence, when hormonal changes cause the enlargement and obstruction of sebaceous glands in the skin. Hormones, genes and environmental factors are also considered to play a part in acne.

What causes acne?
Acne spots are caused by the obstructions of hair follicles by sebum (the oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands.) When a plug of sebum becomes trapped in a follicle, bacteria multiply and the follicle becomes inflamed. The cause of the change in sebum secretion at puberty is uncertain but it seems to be linked with increased levels in androgen hormones (male sex hormones). There may also be a genetic factor, since acne can run in families. Some drugs may bring on or aggravate existing acne (e.g. Corticosteroids which increase oil production in the skin).

How does IPL actually work on acne?
The discovery of Intense Pulsed Light treatments is one of the most significant advances for many years in the treatment of live acne (acne vulgaris).

What is the cause of adult acne?
Studies have shown that the number of adults suffering from acne has increased in the last decade, more so in the case of women. This is believed to be mainly due to a combination of stress and hormonal changes. With more responsibilities at home and in the work place, stress levels are high, causing the skin to become oilier leading to acne attacks. Long term use of cosmetics that contain oils derived from fatty acids as their base can cause acne breakouts. Known as acne cosmetic, this condition is seen in some actresses who start off with clear skin, but then develop acne halfway through filming a television program.

At what age do people stop getting acne?
There is a misconception that only teenagers have acne breakouts and that once they pass this stage, acne will disappear. While this may be true in some cases, it is not always so. Acne in fact becomes a chronic problem in many people and refuses to leave even after attaining adulthood. On the other hand, some people who have had no acne during their teenage years, start developing it well after the age of 20. This condition is also very common and known as adult onset acne.

I have spots but I don’t think I have acne – would I benefit from IPL treatment?
Anything from the smallest blackhead to the largest cyst, is in fact acne. There is a misconception that you only have acne from grade 3 onwards and often people only seek treatment from their doctor for moderate to severe acne, when in fact their acne could benefit significantly by early intervention.

Overview:
Excess hair can be unsightly, difficult or inconvenient to remove and grows back quickly. Shaving, waxing and depilatory creams are all temporary methods that must be repeated on a regular basis. Zeolight Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) hair removal is the only clinically proven treatment available for hair removal. We can treat all hair colours including reduction for grey, white and fine hairs due to the combination of IPL and RF and our Pigmentine gel.

FAQ's

How does Zeolight hair removal work?
Zeolight uses short, safe bursts of light emitted from a flash lamp to remove unwanted hair from the body within minutes. Light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft, where it heats and destroys the hair. If the hair is in growth stage (anagen), the heat is transmitted down the hair shaft to lining the follicle shaft. Hair caught in the growth stage will not grow again. Other follicles, which are not actively growing may produce new hair. These follicles will need to be targeted in the growth stage to effect follicle damage.

How does Zeolight IPL/RF Combination work?
The basis for permanent hair reduction is to cause irreversible damage of the hair follicle by heating it, but not burning the surrounding tissues – this is achieved by the introduction of RADIO FREQUENCY (RF). RF is not attracted to melanin of the hair follicle.

Energy from the IPL light pulse acts as a guide for the RF energy, So it is possible to keep the IPL energy low and have higher RF energy which is easily absorbed by the pre-warmed hair follicle. This will avoid the heating side effects and discomfort sometimes experienced with IPL alone. This also means that extremely dark skin can be treated with no severe side effects (such as burning or hyper-pigmentation) and also enables treatment of grey blonde and red hair. IPL with RF treatment is suitable for all skin and hair colours from very light to very dark.

Why do I need to shave prior to treatment?
Hairs should be 1 to 2mm long when the patient comes in for treatment so it is possible to mark out the treatment area. Long hairs take up the energy and prevent all of it reaching the hair follicle. If the hair is normally shaved and can be seen when shaven then patients can shave right up to the day of treatment although plucking and waxing should not be done. By avoiding epilation and waxing for 4 weeks before treatment it ensures as many follicles as possible contain a hair and this can be destroyed by the light.

Why do hairs 'grow' after treatment?
Contrary to other treatments, hairs are not vaporized by the Zeolight treatment the hair follicles are killed by the heat but the hairs remain in the skin and often become attached to the epidermis. They will fall out after 1 to 3 weeks as the epidermis is renewed. During this period it will seem that the hairs are growing as the epidermis pushes them out.

How long does a Zeolight treatment take?
The crystal within the Zeolight applicator that guides the light to the skin is 5cm2 or 22cm2, so small or large areas can be treated in one flash of light. Treatment of the upper lip takes approximately 2 minutes, whereas both legs via the largest hand piece in the world will take 35 minutes.

How many treatments do I need?
Hair growth is cyclical as hair follicles go through resting and growing phases. The number of hairs in this phase varies from 10 to 70% depending on the body site. The lengths of the growth cycles also vary. For most patients (unless there is a hormone imbalance) an average of eight treatments is needed to remove virtually all hairs although facial hair may require more treatments. After the first treatment most clients get a significant reduction in hair density and also new grown hairs tend to become finer.

Does it hurt?
Due to the combination of IPL and RF the majority of clients only feel heat. Consequently it hurts more in dark skinned people and those with dense, dark hairs. If there is a hormone imbalance then they may feel it a bit more than others. Do I need to take special precautions before and after treatment? The light used is completely safe and visible. It is, however, important to avoid tanning (sun, solarium or self-tanning products) before and during the treatment period. Otherwise your tanned skin will absorb more light, which makes treatment less effective and less comfortable.

What is a Hollywood Carbon Facial?
The Hollywood Carbon Facial, also known carbon peel, is a no-downtime procedure that helps rejuvenate the appearance of ageing, damaged skin. This gentle procedure is a great way to get a quick skin refresher without the longer downtime associated with other laser procedures. It evens skin tone, reducing appearance of pigment, fine lines and acne scars, your skin will fill and look younger. The treatment can be performed alone, but works best when you have several treatments over a period of time. During your carbon peel treatment, a layer of liquid carbon is applied to the area of skin requiring treatment. The laser light is then passed over the area, causing the carbon to vaporise and remove dead skin cells, contaminants, and oil. Those with oily skin, blackheads, enlarged pores, dull skin, and acne on the face or body instantly benefit from a refreshed appearance. Clients see softer, smoother, and firmer skin almost instantly.

The laser feels like a pin prick on the skin, so it would not be considered painful or uncomfortable. The effect of the procedure is practically immediate, and there is no downtime. Without a long recovery time, the Hollywood Laser Peel is an efficient treatment that can help you avoid the frustrations of other similar procedures.

Overview of Benefits:

Cleansing: The liquid carbon material applied during the start of your procedure absorbs oil and impurities from deep within the pores. When the laser targets and destroys the carbon particles, the absorbed material goes with it.

Exfoliating: The laser is highly attracted to the carbon substance. When it passes along the treatment area, it exfoliates while removing dead skin cells and blackheads. The result is smoother, glowing skin with reduced pore size and an improved, even skin tone.

Rejuvenating: Carbon peels penetrate the deep layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production, which results in firmer, plumper, more radiant skin and a reduction of fine lines.

Acne and Oil Destroying: The heat omitted by the laser during the carbon peel reduces the bacteria responsible for acne, allowing for improved control of pimples and outbreaks. The heat also shrinks the sebaceous glands, reducing oil production and congestion in the pores. The carbon peel has been shown to be both safe and effective.

Is the Hollywood Carbon Facial right for me?
The Hollywood Laser Peel can be used safely on all skin types and is most useful when the skin is already healthy or only mildly damaged. If skin damage is significant it may be better to start with another laser. If your skin is healthy, the Hollywood Laser Peel can be repeated as often as desired to maintain its healthy glow or to prepare for a special event.

This treatment can be a great way to look your best at any occasion or in your daily life, similar to our many other treatments. Our Hollywood Laser Peel treatment combines innovative technology with expertise to give you consistently great results with every visit. We have the capabilities to give you the service you want with a consultation that can help determine what the best treatment will be.

The carbon peel is an essential part of many A-list celebrities’ beauty regimes and is presently one of the most coveted treatments in Hollywood, which is now available in Halifax. Customised treatment plans for the face may advise a single session for a quick pre-event glow, or on-going treatments for anti-ageing and repair of skin conditions including acne scars, enlarged pores, pigmentation and fine lines.

Overview:

The colour of our skin, hair and iris of the eyes is due to melanin – a brown or black pigment produced by special cells called melanocytes. Melanin production is hereditary but increases with exposure to sunlight. Skin that has been exposed to UV light can produce irregular or abnormal pigment production in the form sun, age, or liver spots (solar lentigos) and freckles (ephelides). Skin looks patchy and uneven in tone and texture.

Pigmentation treatment uses Intense Pulsed Light which can effectively treat certain pigment problems by breaking down the pigmentation into smaller particles, which are then eliminated by the body’s own immune system.

FAQ's

How does Zeolight work for Pigmentation treatments?
Zeolight works by directing well controlled pulses of light into the upper skin layer. The light is absorbed by one of the body's own natural chemicals – melanin – which is concentrated in the pigmented areas. Melanin converts the light energy into heat. This heat is used to destroy the parts of the cells in which the melanin is stored. The visible light produced by the Zeolight system is carefully controlled to produce the correct pulse length and right amount of energy to destroy the target without damaging surrounding tissue.

What can I expect?
Following your IPL treatment, the skin may be slightly red and the areas of pigment will darken and may appear more obvious, rising to the surface of the skin before being exfoliated and fading away naturally within 1-2 weeks. This is a positive indication of a successful IPL treatment and no cause for concern.

How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments required will depend on the extent of your Pigmentation. We recommend on average 1-3. During each treatment we can achieve substantial results due to the fact we have the best equipment which is IPL/ laser.

Are the treatments painful?
Patients often refer the feeling as a tingling sensation each time the laser fires the flash. Patients are able to return to work or go about their daily routines straight away.

Overview:

Radio frequency skin tightening (RF) is an aesthetic technique that uses RF energy to heat tissue and stimulate subdermal collagen production in order to reduce the appearance of fine lines and loose skin. The technique induces tissue remodelling and production of new collagen and elastin.

FAQ's

How does it work?
Radio Frequency (RF) stimulates the water molecules within the lower levels of the skin. When the temperature reaches 68-72 degrees it stimulates the lower layers to immediately contract and stimulate the collagen and elastin fibres creating a lifting and tightening of the skin – resulting in toned, younger looking skin!

How many treatments will I need?
A course of 6 - 8 treatments every 7 - 14 days is normally recommended for skin tightening. Maintenance sessions will also be required.

What can I expect after treatment?
The treated area may be pink for a short time after treatment, but this dissipates quickly. Normal activities can be resumed immediately and no special aftercare is required. Immediately after treatment, skin elasticity and firmness will have improved.

What parts of my body will benefit most from Radio Frequency Skin Tightening?
Radio Frequency (RF) technology can be used for skin tightening and lifting effects on any areas including face, upper arms, abdomen, back, thighs and buttocks. The most common treatments of the face are treatments for ageing and lax skin on the chin, neck, underneath and above the eyes, and for saggy brow lines. On the body, radio frequency technology is most commonly used for skin tightening, cellulite and reduction of stretch marks.

Contraindications to RF skin tightening?
The therapy must be avoided by persons who suffer from collagen diseases, clients with pacemaker or defibrillator and malignant history.

Overview:

Rosacea is a progressive, inflammatory vascular disorder which primarily affects the central part of the face and is recognised by facial flushing/blushing, facial redness, pustules and thread veins. It rarely affects the scalp, neck, chest or other areas. In severe cases, particularly in men, the soft tissue of the nose may swell, producing bulbous enlargement known as rhinophyma. Intense Pulsed Light treatment has been shown to be very effective in Rosacea treatment. It works by a process called photothermolysis. This light therapy selectively destroys the abnormal vessels that cause the Rosacea effect, allowing thicker walled micro vessels to be laid down.

FAQ's

How does Zeolight work for Rosacea treatments?
People with Rosacea have many facial thread veins which dilate to certain stimuli (e.g. hot bath or spicy food) and stay open for longer periods of time compared to non-Rosacea sufferers. These thread veins have weaker walls and therefore do not function properly. Intense Pulsed Light treatment has been shown to be very effective in the treatment of Rosacea. It works by a process called photothermolysis. This light therapy selectively destroys the abnormal vessels (thread veins) that cause the Rosacea effect, allowing thicker walled micro vessels to be laid down.

What are the symptoms of Rosacea?
Rosacea can vary substantially from one individual to another, and in most cases some rather than all of the potential signs and symptoms appear. The four primary signs of Rosacea are:

  • Flushing or blushing
  • Persistent redness
  • Bumps and spots
  • Thread veins

How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments required will depend on the extent of your Rosacea. We recommend on average 1-3. During each treatment we can achieve substantial results due to the fact we have the best equipment which is IPL.

Overview:

Thread veins are formed by an increase in the size of small blood vessels beneath the surface of the skin. Sometimes referred to as telangiectasia or spider naevi, these tiny red, blue or purple veins can appear anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the face and legs.

Thread vein removal treatment is carried out using energy heat pulses which are applied in short bursts which close down the thread veins without perforating them or damaging the surrounding tissue. Following the thread vein removal treatment, the vessels quickly clear and are re-absorbed by the body, leaving little or no trace of the original lesion.

FAQ's

What causes Thread Veins?
These broken veins and capillaries are found in men and women mainly on the face, which are caused either by age, trauma, sun exposure or alcohol.

How does IPL Facial Thread Vein Removal work?
Our advanced technology removes facial thread veins by delivering precisely controlled strong pulses of filtered light which are absorbed by the targeted blood vessel, heating it to a point where it is destroyed. Following treatment, the vessels quickly collapse and are re-absorbed by the body to be flushed out by our body’s natural defences, leaving little or no trace of the original vessel. This procedure is extremely safe and effective as it targets only the blood vessel and leaves the surrounding tissue undisturbed.

What can I expect from my appointment?
You will not be treated for IPL thread vein removal without first undertaking a thorough consultation with our highly trained therapists. This will include a patch test which will confirm your suitability for the treatment. Your appointment will begin with the application of a cooling gel to the area being treated, which will minimise discomfort during the thread vein removal procedure. You will also be supplied with eye protection to wear during the treatment. There is little or no pain during the procedure. You may feel a sensation similar to a rubber band snapping on the skins surface. It is typically felt more around the nose area due to it being more sensitive, however, your therapist will ensure you are as comfortable as possible and lower your settings if required. With the advanced technology available combined with our highly trained and knowledgeable therapists, your treatment plan will be completely customized and tailored to your specific skin concerns.

When will you see results?
Results can be seen immediately after the application of the laser/IPL.

How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments required will depend on the extent of your veins.
